Most synthetic pure polymers are resistant to microbial attack. But additives (such as plasticizers, lubricants, pigments, antioxidants, etc.) reduce this ability. Plasticizer residual fatty acids such as stearate esters can be degraded by microorganisms and lead to damage to the polymer surface, properties, and even infrastructure. It is known that microbial degradation of natural polymers is accomplished through the biosynthesis of enzyme proteins. These enzyme proteins can land on the cell wall or exist in the protoplasmic structure of the cell. Some are able to sneak into the environment, while others remain in the cell and are released only when the cell is dissolved or mechanically broken. Enzymes have only a highly specific catalytic capacity for biochemical reactions that proceed rapidly under suitable physiological conditions.

There are two kinds of biodegradable plastic degradation methods, which can be divided into (1) the biological degradation of the physics: when microbial attack after erosion of polymer materials, because of the biological cell growth make hydrolysis, ionization or proton polymer components and split into pieces of the oligomer, polymer molecular structure remains the same, this is the polymer biophysical function of the degradation process. (2) Biochemical degradation method: due to the direct action of microorganisms or enzymes, the polymer is decomposed or oxidized into small molecules, until the final decomposition into carbon dioxide and water.
